Applications for the 2023 Open Book: Australian Publishing Internship are now open, with the program expanding to offer three paid internships in Sydney and Melbourne.

The Open Book internship program aims to provide a well-rounded introduction to the Australian publishing industry, and create practical and sustainable pathways towards long-term careers for aspiring professionals. Over the course of the program, interns will gain in-house experience at Australian publishing organisations from across the commercial, independent, and education sectors.

Interns are supported throughout the program by an external mentor, Camha Pham, to guide and support them through their internship. Pham is an accredited freelance editor, with over 10 years of experience in the publishing industry across trade and educational publishing.

Open Book was devised to create alternate pathways into publishing for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. As such there are no requirements for either qualifications or book industry experience. Applications are encouraged from anyone with a keen interest in books, reading and the publishing industry. While the internship is an entry-level position, Open Book does not equate this with youth or inexperience, so there is no upper age limit for applicants. Of the internships available, one is an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role.

The program, jointly devised by members of the Australian publishing industry, ran its pilot program in 2022, and received over 200 applications for two internships. The APA is proud to continue as a program partner for this initiative. Open Book is funded by the Australia Council and the Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund, with the support of host publishing companies: Allen & Unwin, HarperCollins, Hardie Grant, Oxford University Press, Scribe Publications, and Thames & Hudson.
