Publishing and Book Selling Experience

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) is a national charity working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander remote Communities across Australia. We are Community-led, responding to requests from remote Communities for culturally relevant books, including early learning board books, resources, and programs to support Communities to create and publish their stories in languages of their choice.

The ILF is embarking on an exciting phase of substantial growth and development and we are seeking to appoint new non-executive Directors to play pivotal roles in achieving our strategic objectives and establishing the next phase of augmenting our governance framework/goals and objectives. This is the first time board roles have been advertised.

To enable the company to meet its strategic objectives your key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Understanding the legal, constitutional, and ethical obligations of being a director
  • Providing strategic direction to the organisation;
  • Monitoring the operational and financial position and performance of the organisation generally; 
  • Assuring the principal risks faced by the organisation are identified and overseeing that appropriate control and monitoring systems are in place to manage the impact of these risks;
  • Indigenous governance implementation.

Board members can be expected to contribute approximately 10 hours per month, including participation on 6 Board meetings and 2 strategy days per year. Directors are expected to attend all Board meetings (some face to face and some by video conference) and serve on one or more Board Committees, including serving as the Chair of a Committee if required.

ILF Ambition and Vision

To provide remote Indigenous Communities the literacy resources they want to support their aspirations for Community and Culture. We believe that reading opens doors to future opportunities and choices.

To continue successfully working with remote Communities to achieve their literacy goals, we have identified a number of key strategic priorities that currently direct our work. They are to:

  • Increase engagement in literacy
  • Ensure access to culturally safe and significant resources
  • Celebrate First Nations’ cultures, languages and connections
  • Enable Community leadership on literacy
  • Build connection between donors and First Nations Peoples’ aspirations
  • Grow Community partnerships and stakeholder engagement.

Skills and Experience

We are seeking applicants with the following skills and experience:

  • Deep experience and influence in Book Publishing and Bookselling and currently employed in the book industry;
  • Value and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures;
  • Alignment with organisational values and willingness to contribute time and expertise to the board and committees;
  • The ability to interact with fellow Directors, management and stakeholders;
  • The ability to have robust discussions and to identify conflicts and engage in discussions on managing conflict;
  • Understand and adhere to director responsibilities and duties;
  • Strategic and decision making skills;
  • Discretion, diplomacy and self-awareness;
  • Accounting and financial literacy and business acumen.
